APSAF 2006
by
Greg Meade, Arrangements Chair

If you were not among the 270 + attendees at the 85 th annual meeting of the Appalachian Society of American Foresters in Charlottesville Virginia, then you missed a lot!! Those in attendance were informed, enlightened, and entertained by a host of great pre-conference workshops, technical sessions, and social activities.

The meeting kicked off Wednesday January 25 th with three pre-conference workshops. Over 75 attended the pesticide recertification session, and special thanks to our co-sponsors for this event, UAP Timberland and Virginia Cooperative Extension. The leadership conference was also held on Wednesday with future and current leaders connecting to ensure an even stronger society moving forward. Last but not least of the pre-conference tours was a tour of James Madison’s Montpelier Presidential Estate in nearby Orange County. Twenty hardy souls endured strong winds and dodged falling branches while enjoying their tour of the “Old Growth” Forest and the Mansion.

The general session kicked off Thursday January 26 th with a welcome from APSAF Chair William Snyder and Virginia’s State Forester Carl Garrison. We quickly got down to business in the technical session. The focus was forests, forest products, and forester certification. We heard from practitioners, certifying organizations, and trade association representatives among others. The technical program generated many thought provoking questions and much discussion both inside and outside of the sessions. One thing is certain, the options for certification are many and the final chapter has yet to be written. The technical session did an excellent job of informing members about forest certification options and the future direction of certification.

It was particularly encouraging to see such a large student presence. In attendance were over 60 student members with representation from Virginia Tech, NC State, Clemson, Duke, Dabney S. Lancaster, and Haywood Tech. A program was put together to try to engage the students and better meet their needs. Nine students participated in mock interviews and took advantage of feedback from forestry professionals. A guided exhibitor tour was also arranged allowing vendors to explain their products or programs and field questions from students. Lastly, a field tour was offered Thursday afternoon. The students visited a recently completed timber harvesting operation, completed a BMP inspection, and learned the basics of the SFI auditing process.

Also on Thursday a spouse’s tour was held with visits to Monticello, Jefferson Vineyard, and Historic Mitchie Tavern for an 18 th Century period lunch. The group of twenty reported having an excellent time. In fact, half of the participants took advantage of being in Charlottesville and made an impromptu visit to the University of Virginia Grounds and the University Bookstore.

Perhaps some of the best time spent at the annual meeting was at the various social events and informal gatherings. The alumni socials were well received and attended, with NC State winning the coveted Best Alumni Reception Award from thealumni judging Committee. At the Thursday evening social we were entertained by the UVA Jazz Ensemble while enjoying each others company, plentiful food, and even a cake adorned with the SAF Logo!

The Foresters and Kenny Funderburke Educational Funds were also big winners during the meeting as over $2000 was raised through the raffle and silent auctions.

By any measure the 85 th Annual APSAF meeting was a success and would not have been possible without the 21 sponsors and 22 exhibitors. A special thanks also to the Skyline Chapter for hosting and especially to all on the arrangements committee members that worked tirelessly to put on an exceptional meeting!

The eyes of the world are on you. Reading many media reports, do you feel that most people don’t understand or appreciate forestry or what foresters do? That they believe the only way to save the forests is to only use products made of bamboo or other “tree free” alternatives? What can we do to help convince the “public” that our forests are being managed well, we are professionals and “wood is good”?

Attend the 2006 APSAF Annual Meeting in Charlottesville, VA. The conference, entitled People, Products and Practices - The 3P’s of Certification, will explore various programs dealing with certification of forestlands, professional foresters and forest products. Speakers from industry, trade associations, government, academia, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other groups will discuss different approaches that have been developed to address the concerns of the public. This is a great opportunity to receive the latest information and meet representatives from many of the certifying programs.

Other events include:

  • a pre-conference pesticide applications recertification workshop
  • APSAF Leadership Workshop
  • a tour of Montpelier and the Landmark Forest, home of James & Dolly Madison
  • Student Career Training
  • spouse’s tour to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, a local winery and Michie Tavern.

An Exhibitor’s Hall will also provide opportunity to meet with representatives from various forestry equipment, supply and service companies.

The meeting will be held at the DoubleTree Hotel (www.charlottesville.doubletree.com) located at 990 Hilton Drive in historic Charlottesville, Virginia. Nestled in the foothills of the legendary Blue Ridge Mountains, the surrounding area is home to some incredible historic destinations including three presidential homes, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, James Madison’s Montpelier and James Monroe’s Ash-Lawn Highland. The Historic Downtown Mall offers unique shopping, dining, child-friendly and cultural opportunities that will appeal to anyone. Charlottesville is also in the heart of Central Virginia’s wine industry and is within one hour of 18 wineries. APSAF 2005 Meeting

By Brian Rogers, Publicity Chair rogers@MillikenForestry.com

The 84 th Annual Conference of the Appalachian Society of American Foresters was hosted by the SAF Central Carolina Chapter in Columbia, South Carolina. The theme for the 2005 APSAF Meeting was “Gaining the Competitive Edge”. A Leadership Workshop was offered prior to the main conference on Wednesday January 26 to all Chair, Chair Elects, SAF members, and guests. A Technical Workshop was held the afternoon of January 26 featuring “Partnering to Promote Fire” where the history of fire ecology in the southeast region was discussed and what active groups like the South Carolina Prescribed Fire Council are doing to use and preserve this important forest management tool.

Three general sessions will be packed into the following two days in order to analyze how forestry in the Southeastern United States measures up locally and internationally with the growth, manufacturing, and marketing of the Southeast’s wood products. What is the “Current Situation” (Session I) with the Southeastern United States’ forestry industry as a whole? During Session II we will ask, “Who are our Competitors and What are Their Products?” Finally, we will discuss “Strategies for Gaining the Competitive Edge” (Session III) in today’s global market.
